Feathered Friends of San Marcos, Texas

Texas state is one of the important areas for both migratory and resident birds.

The rich diversity of birds is an indicator of a healthy ecosystem. Through our actions, we intend to explore and understand the diversity of our birds found in our locality and beyond, their behavior, ecology, and vital role in sustaining our ecosystem.

All photos are obtained from the wild without disturbing or harming the birds by the author.

Ruby-throated Hummingbird (Male)

Hummingbirds are some of the smallest, yet truly breathtaking to watch at in avian family. This male hummingbird was photographed in the backyard of my house owner's friend Dr. Gale in San Marcos. The pronounced iridescent ruby plumage is visible on his throat.

Contrary to the males, the female Ruby-throated Hummingbirds have white throat with faint grey and buffy streaking. Juveniles looks similar to adult females as well.

Turkey Vulture

One of the most widely distributed new world vultures found in Texas. They are some of the most efficient scavengers.

Black Vulture

Is also one of the members of new world vultures and common scavengers seen around San Marcos, Texas.

Mourning Dove

Zenaida macroura

Known for their call resembling a mourn. They around mostly seen in and around the bushes and are efficient seed dispersers.

Red-shouldered Hawk

Buteo lineatus

A raptor species whose presence indicates tall trees and water bodies. They breed in the same nesting sites for many years.

American Goldfinch

Spinus tristis

Probably a non-breeding male with contrast to bright golden plumage seen in their breeding counterparts. Scouring the oak trees.

Large and conspicuous. They are native to North America. Known for their high energetic foraging maneuvers while patrolling the rivers.

Observed half a dozen of them perched on a dead branch along the San Marcos river.

Golden-fronted Woodpecker

Melanerpes aurifrons

One of the native birds of the North America. Prefers open woodlands and often seen close to human settlements.

Black-capped Chickadee

Poecile atricapillus

One of the most popular birds of North America with distinct chick-a-dee call heard while foraging from one tree to another.

White-winged Dove

Zenaida asiatica

Bit larger than the Mourning Dove. Seen them almost through the year in San Marcos. Breeding in the spring. The population seems to be thriving well.
